Humboldt Redwood offers two, AIA LU/HSW credit hour courses that provide insight into specifying Redwood as a sustainable building product. These courses are available online to anyone. To architecture firms and AIA affiliated groups in the Western U.S., we offer these courses in an in-person setting as well. We will work with you to make all the arrangements to provide the course at your office so that your staff and colleagues can easily earn AIA credit while learning about real, strong, Redwood. At this time, we are not able to offer our courses in-person in the Eastern U.S. or outside of the United States.
In addition, we offer an AIA approved course entitled “Fire Retardant Treated Wood (FRTW) for Commercial and Residential Structures” through our partnership with Viance, manufacturer of the D-Blaze® fire retardant preservative.
Building with Redwood Timbers. This course provides evidence that Redwood Timbers offer a strong, durable option for building projects without sacrificing quality or elegance. It explores the use of Redwood Timbers for post and beam construction, entryways, decorative elements, and outdoor living structures such as pergolas and gazebos. The course provides comparisons between Redwood and other timber options. It also provides information about Redwood’s compliance with California’s Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI), thanks to its natural resistance to fire. Finally, this course provides information about sustainable forestry practices and how that relates to quality lumber products.
This course is available online through HanleyWood.com.
Fire Retardant Treated Wood (FRTW) For Commercial and Residential Structures. This course describes the fire retardant features of FRT wood, and the difference between fire resistance and flame spread. The course also lists the various types of FRTW and their specific applications. The course further explains what the model building codes require, and how FRTW is specified. Finally, the course describes how FRT wood is manufactured, tested, and certified.
This course is available online through Ron Blank & Associates.
Redwood: A Sustainable Building Product. This course provides evidence that Redwood makes it easy to build sustainably without sacrificing quality or elegance. It also provides information on how Redwood is renewable and recyclable, and cleaner to produce than composite or plastic building products. The details of a recent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) comparing redwood and plastic/composite decking options are shared, as well as information about Redwood’s Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). Members of the California Redwood Association (CRA), including Humboldt Redwood, have a long history of environmental stewardship and a reputation for some of the more progressive and innovative voluntary forest and wildlife management programs in the industry.
