Cleaning Redwood is a Breeze!

Dirt, grime, and environmental debris can detract from the beauty of your backyard designs. Like any outdoor structure, a redwood deck, fence or other backyard addition needs some basic cleaning and maintenance to keep it looking its best and to preserve the natural strength and durability of the wood.

Simple cleaning is easy and quick! Regular sweeping and hosing down will take care of day-to-day debris.  If you notice a build-up of dirt, leaves, etc., a stiff non-metal bristle brush and bucket of water mixed with mild detergent followed by a hose down should do the trick.

Since Redwood is naturally resistant to insects, disease and mildew, you probably won’t need to use a stronger cleaning solution, but if there should be some visible mildew, adding a little household bleach to the detergent solution should solve the problem.  Diluted trisodium phosphate or oxalic acid are helpful in removing stains and restoring natural color.  For more tips, visit redwood maintenance and click on cleaning redwood.

Selecting a good finish with a mildewcide is an important preventive measure for avoiding stains and mildew in the first place, as well as preserving the natural beauty of the wood.  For a guideline to selecting the right finish to suit your needs, go to our redwood finishing tips page.

When kept clean and properly maintained, your redwood structure will stay strong and beautiful for many years of family enjoyment!
