Redwood and Douglas-fir Timbers

Redwood-Timbers-Used-in-a-GazeboThe use of redwood and Douglas-fir timbers for timber framing and exposed beam construction can produce dramatic results and lend the natural beauty and strength of wood to building projects. Humboldt Redwood Timbers, including beams and posts, are also a great choice for garden and landscaping structures. And redwood is a renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable material that provides environmental advantages over alternative building materials.

Naturally strong, aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally friendly, redwood and Douglas-fir timbers from Humboldt Redwood are a great choice for your structural building needs.

Using Timbers, Beams, and Posts

Redwood-Timbers-Used-in-an-ArborRedwood is one of the lightest, yet structurally strong, softwoods found in North America, making it ideal for a wide range of structural applications where large timbers are required. Timbers are most often used in structural applications including the following:

  • Timber beams
  • Timber posts
  • Shade structures
  • Gazebos
  • Pergolas
  • Arbors
  • Headers
  • Rafters
  • Framing
  • Barns

Timbers also make beautiful interior design elements when used in exposed frame construction. We have several informative downloads to help you learn more about Redwood Timbers, including information around how Redwood stacks up against Western Red Cedar.

Dimensions and Specifications

Timbers are the largest pieces of solid sawn lumber produced by sawmills. To be classified as a timber, a piece of lumber must be at least 5” wide on each side.

Humboldt Redwood offers Douglas-fir timbers and redwood timbers in 6-inch and larger sizes, in lengths up to 24 feet. And, while not specifically classified as a timber, our Douglas-fir timbers and redwood timbers are also available in 3-inch and 4-inch dimension as well.

Our Scotia sawmill can accommodate special order Douglas-fir timbers and redwood timbers up to 18”x 24”x24’.

Large shade structures, pergolas, and arbors may be constructed with our Humboldt Redwood timbers. 6”x6” posts are structurally stable and can hold oversized header beams and long lengths of lattice.

The following table outlines the Humboldt Redwood timbers we offer in-stock. We can however cut larger dimensions for special orders. Contractors and architects specifying projects with solid sawn timbers are encouraged to contact a Humboldt Redwood dealer in your area. We will work with your designs and specifications to custom produce Douglas-fir timbers and redwood timbers for your important projects.
